Session Online Theater
If you cannot get to Kagurazaka, a good number of our performances can be watched from wherever you are.
Session Online Theater began in May 2020, when the room had been closed for two months and every performance from March had been cancelled. It started as a run of streamed solos - the first was by Mariko Kakizaki, followed by Ruri Mito and others - and it did not stop when the theater reopened. Streaming is now a standing part of the programme rather than a substitute for it.
How it works
| Price | An online viewing ticket is usually ¥1,500, tax included. Each production sets its own price. |
|---|---|
| Live | Streamed live as the performance happens in the theater, in Japan Standard Time (UTC+9). |
| Archive | Available to watch back for roughly a week after the performance. The exact window is given with each production. |
| Cameras | Theater 21 Fes is relayed with five cameras and live switching. Other productions vary. |
| Sales close | Ticket sales normally close shortly before the end of the archive window, so it is possible to buy after the live performance and still watch. |
Buying a ticket
Online viewing tickets are sold through Zaiko, a streaming ticket platform, on a page specific to each production. The link is published with the performance details on the Japanese event listings and on the online theater page.
If you are buying from outside Japan and the process gives you trouble, please write to us in English. Tell us which performance you want to see and we will send you the direct link and help you through it.
What gets streamed
Not everything in the theater is streamed - it depends on the company and on the rights to the music. As a rule you can expect:
● Theater 21 Fes - the ten-minute-work platform, streamed as standard, with a week of archive viewing
● Dance Bridge and other Session House-produced programmes
● Selected festival programmes - several strands of the 35th Anniversary Festival in September 2026 carry an online viewing ticket at ¥1,500
● Dzone productions, where the company has chosen to add streaming
Where a performance is streamed, we say so in the listing. If you want to know whether a particular production will be available online, ask us and we will find out.
A note on language
Most of what we stream is dance and physical theater, and needs no Japanese. Talk events and post-show discussions are in Japanese, and are not subtitled.
